back of the bay

In Ballard Estate, not too far from Elephant Gate and the navy dockyards is a wren of ill-maintained streets with idiosyncratic names that people still use, despite the MNS-ification of the nomenclature. On Goa Road is the tiny Matthieu Foss photo gallery. Finding it took us a half hour of asking and slowly zeroing in after casting quite a wide circle around the area. This charming Irani cafe beckoned from one street corner… Suitably romantic for a V’day post, I think ๐Ÿ˜‰

how far will go?

February 8, 2011   Comments (5)

farwillgoSurprisingly, this film didn’t do so well!
In fact, it went pretty far out of sight, pretty quickly ๐Ÿ˜€
But I love how they confidently splashed the ad on BEST buses and such. Sigh. It may have been a really good film, but I didn’t see it because of the grammar. I’m hoping the people who skipped “Toss” were just spoilt for choice, not begrudging of the advertising (read: grammar nazis) ๐Ÿ˜‰
The other one currently out that nothing on earth would induce me to see is titled “Angel”…newcomer actors, directorial debut, the works – horridly unexpressive advertising.
Social media folks, what can indie/low budget films do to even stand a chance (besides hiring a good copy editor)?

hommade undies

hommade undiesThis one’s from closer to home than the last post. Very, very close to home, actually – I found this at the local supermarket. If you’re still figuring it out, let me help you – it’s recycling at its best: cartons of men’s briefs (I can’t tell what brand it is, can you?) stocked with toor dal, moong dal, and ‘hommade’ garlic/ginger paste. Well, that’s not really what I expect to find in a packet of briefs, but hey, it’s all a means to an end …

Grant me…

Giant Buddha…the sense of humor to view all things around me with some equanimity…and to stay in the moment without spiraling out of control. Like when the idiots at the stop light outside my house think that honking will vaporize the idiot in front and miraculously clear a special path for them.
Anyway, this was taken months ago in Hong Kong and while it’s a modern sculpture, there was definitely a sense of serenity around it. I kept, however, wanting to speak into my communicator watch and say “Giant Buddha…into motion!” ๐Ÿ™‚

eww. or, rather, ewe?

This actually says “The myth of youth guardian angel” and then the rest of the text says “enhance body energy; revitalizing to the skin” – 60 capsules made from the placenta of sheep.

Err. Right, then. The damn thing says “myth” and people still buy it? The elixir of youth based on not even a half-claim. If I remember right, these cost something like USD 100! Holy cow! Or sheep. Or something.

for real?

I just watched “the Oh in Ohio” and was reminded that while I hadn’t gone inside this store, I did have this picture of the window display ๐Ÿ™‚

And since a picture is worth a 1,000 words and there’s plenty of quirky objets d’art here to keep you busy, I’ll shut up.

what kind, again?

Test full. C’mon. It’s test-full icecream. Just like the kulfi you get in Chowpatty which is “with the full of nuts and fruit”.

Sorry for the blur. I had my taxi wallah slow down but the vendor to whose bicycle this icebox was attached kept darting back and forth, even as he smiled happily for my camera phone! ๐Ÿ™‚

obey!

March 19, 2010   Comments (1)

obey graffiti in Amsterdam near Central Station.
It’s like Peter Gabriel’s Milgram’s 37 song, which, has the sum lyric of “We do what we’re told”. The lyric refers, of course, to Milgram’s experiment on how authority can make people torture other people (mob mentality for violence //nazis, religionist/casteist/racist/genderists). And this link taught me something I didn’t know: When he performed this in concert, Gabriel got the crowd chanting “We do what we’re told.” Since the song was not yet released and the crowd did not know its meaning, they were ironically aping the results of the experiment by doing just as Gabriel told them.

new a vegย err, cos I’m a new vegetarian? I knew a vegetarian? I’m not sure, either. What do you think it’s supposed to mean?I spotted this flapping in the breeze on 31st road, Bandra, out of the corner of my eye. I kept walking and I guess somewhere in my head, I was trying hard to process it and figure out what it really said. Then I just had to go back and check it. The seller was more than happy to let me take a photo ๐Ÿ™‚ If you want one of these, let me know. I’ll take orders in S, M, L and XL ๐Ÿ™‚

This is a blog post

While I was in Germany and the Netherlands, I took a couple of walking tours and the English guides in both Amsterdam and Berlin made the same jokes about how creative the natives were when it came to naming things. The national monument is called “The National Monument,” the concert hall is “The Concert Hall,” etc. etc. etc. Well, we have our Mahatma Gandhi Margs and our Chhatrapati Shivaji everythings to counter it.
Still, some of it was amusing to me. Like this shop. Perfectly named, who could ask for more? ๐Ÿ™‚
