abandoned

May 14, 2009

I didn’t know until very recently that Mumbai is one of the very few places in the world that hosts flamingos within city limits. (Nairobi and Miami are two others.) So of course I wanted to go see. And with a video journalist friend and an expert ornithologist friend, I went off to do a piece on them (hey, why not share with the world?) The flamingo photos I took are not worth publishing, they were too far away, but, on one of the quays, against the backdrop of an oil refinery and a thermal power plant blurred by grey wisps of smog and a flock of flamingos rocking gently like rose petals on oil, were these rotting, abandoned boats. Sewri was nothing like I expected. But these boats just grabbed me. Quite poetic a metaphor, aren’t they?(If you’d like, you can listen to the story and see Nitin’s photos)

(T)rolled over from your dabeli post on Mumbaikar…there was a documentary made on the flamingoes of sewri bay…years ago. I think it was called ‘In the Pink’. (I never got to watch it, tho) I think the script was written by Jerry Pinto…cant remember who directed it. not sure if it was Ashima Narain…

@varun @kristopher thanks šŸ˜‰ and yes, I’d be game for that, let’s go!
@aristarkhos thanks! I’ll look for it! I like Jerry Pinto’s work. There’s also a book out peripherally about Flamingos that’s on my list of ‘to-buy’ – http://www.bollyadda.com/2009/02/lost-flamingos-of-bombay.html

  7. Can I just say nice to read a relief to find somebody who essentially knows just what they may be discussing on the web. You definitely realize how to bring an issue to light and enable it to be critical. More people require to read this particular and understand this side of the story. I cant believe you aren’t very popular as you certainly have the gift.
